In "Rules," Catherine struggles with conflicted feelings about her brother, David, who has autism. She loves him and takes good care of him, but also finds life with David pretty frustrating. What do you think about Catherine's reactions to David?
Catherine also feels a little neglected by her parents, who put so much energy into David. She feels like they just don't care about her needs as much as her brother's. What did you think about the way Catherine's parents handled the situation?

Wind Bird: Gift of the Mist
Sarah Stiles Bright re-tells a Passamaquoddy folktale in her book "Wind Bird: Gift of the Mist." This is a beautiful story about a well-meaning hero, Gluskop, who tries to solve a village's problems by manipulating nature.
Does this story contain any messages for us about our relationship with the natural world?
Let me know what you think!

The Adventures of Marco Polo
I just finished reading about Marco Polo's incredible exploration of the Middle and Far East. The description of Kublai Khan's Empire was fascinating.
As a teacher, I thought it was interesting that Khan built schools for all children, including peasants. It took another 500 years for the western cultures to provide public education for all children.

Where do our dreams come from?
I think Lois Lowry did an amazing job of weaving the world of these imaginary creatures that bring us our dreams. She also told an interesting tale of how we grow in our self-understanding through adversity.
If you could name yourself now, what name would you choose and why?
